Driller’s Method Quiz No. 1

In order to get more understanding about driller’s method, there are some quizzes that will help you get clear picture of it.

1st example –

Before start circulating, you have the following information

Original Shut in Drill Pipe Pressure = 500 psi

Initial Circulating Pressure (ICP) = 1500 psi

After end of 1st circulation of Driller’s Method, the drillpipe pressure gauge and the casing pressure gauge shows that the circulating drill pipe pressure = 1500 psi and casing pressure = 650 psi (see the figure below).

Do you think what is happening with the well?

Answer: There is influx (kick) remaining in well because casing pressure is higher than the original shut in drill pipe pressure. Additional circulation is required for this case.

Explanation

Driller’s method concept is to hold bottom hole pressure constant therefore with neglecting frictional pressure, once influx in out of hole, you should see that casing pressure must be equal to initial shut in drill pipe pressure

Drill pipe side: BHP = Hydrostatic Pressure + Shut in Drill pipe pressure —> equation 1

Casing side: BHP = Hydrostatic pressure + Casing Pressure + Frictional Pressure —> equation 2

Neglect frictional pressure so we can write the formula like this.

Casing side: BHP = Hydrostatic pressure + Casing Pressure —> equation 3

With the assumption stated above, you will see that

equation 1 = equation 3

Then you will know that

Shut in Drill pipe pressure = Casing Pressure

    Hi Rachain,

I need your assistance with the following questions:

    1. What is flow check? How is it executed?

    2. How does trip tank work? What is involved in the circulation system while tripping ie trip tank is connected to what etc? I only know the circulation system while drilling.

Your response would be much appreciated. I have already tried to do some online searches but could not really get the answers yet.

    Regards

It would be nice if you can share some of your knowledge about the following topic

    (1) The kill and choke circuit i.e the kill line, the choke line and the low pressure circuit., Basically what is their function and how they are to be used?
(2)Calculation of pore pressure and reservoir pressure.

please read this equision and reply the right answer,

if i get casing pressure is greater than MAASP, while the influx is inside the casing or out of the hole, what i can do?

    • You still need to circulate the influx out of the well. Since the influx is inside the casing, your casing shoe will not increase while the influx is moving.

Even though you exceed the MAASP, you may not see the losses because while drilling, drilling mud can strengthen your shoe a little bit.
