Post Shut-In Procedures while Drilling

There are several figures that must be recorded after the well has been properly shut in in case of a well control situation.

Shut-In Casing Pressure (SICP): Read and record the shut-in casing pressure (casing gauge).

In order to get the proper pressure reading, the casing gauge should be installed upstream of the closed choke.

Shut-In Drillpipe Pressure (SIDP): Read and record the shut-in drillpipe pressure. You must remember that whether you have a float in drilling string or not.

If there is no a float is in the drillstring, the shut in drill pipe pressure can be read directly from the standpipe manifold.

If there is a float in the drillstring, you need to bump the float in order to determine the correct shut in drill pipe pressure. I will write about how to bump float to record the shut in drill pipe pressure later.

Time: Record the time that the well control situation is occurred and keep an accurate time log for the entire well kill operation

Closing Pressure: Record the closing pressure of BOP. In order to prevent well bore fluid leaking through BOP elements, the closing pressure should be high enough.

Pit Gain: Read and record the pit gain. Pit volume gained is very critical for the maximum casing pressure calculation. You should check the volume gained from mud logger and driller in order to get the accurate figure. I don’t recommend you to ask only one person to get this figure. It is better to have another data source to compare with.

After the well is properly secured and all information is gathered, the supervisor on the rig should inform his supervisor to find the proper method to kill the well.

    Hi,

Thank you for keep on updating this site. Keep up the good work!!

I am a new drilling engineer (freshgrad). I found that there are a lot of new things that i need to catch up at work. All the basic/ fundamental concepts and also technological advancement in the industry.

I assume that you are kind of expert in drilling. What is your advice to me in order to become a good drilling engineer? How to retain all the fundamental theories and concepts in mind since i tend to easily forget things that i have read since i am not just focusing on one thing at work.

    Regards

    • Hi Adam,

Welcome to the oilfield business. First thing as a new drilling engineer, you need to learn in the filed as much as possible. Do not think that I go to the rigs few times and I will know everything. Operation experience can not be obtained from the school !!!!. You also need to apply your technical background for the job as well. Trying to integrate your technical knowledge and drilling practices in to work will make you be a good drilling engineer.

I guess your company will provide you a lot of training which is the must …. it means that you should attend as much as basic courses because they will help you integrate everything together. DO NOT THINK LIKE THIS -> oh i will not go to school if the company won’t pay me extra money on my day off or on my weekend……

How you focus on the job??

On the rig site: you MUST learn about drilling operation. Ask as much as you can…. do not lazy… This is the time that you will learn the real thing.

In the office: you will learn about technical knowledge to drill wells. Ask your boss for work because each work will help you learn something. Sometimes, you will get small assignment like data collection, report correct, etc and don’t think that this is a shit job….. it won’t be worthy for me. Some small jobs will help you a lot in long run.

After working for few years, you will know yourself which ways you should go. You may consider working in the field or working in office or studying further.

I wish my words would help you.

Any questions, please drop me emails.

Ps, I am not the expert. I just work in this business for a long time.

      Best regards,
      Rachain J.

Thank you for providing informations on this site,
I’m following a Drilling, completion and wokover Supervisor Training in Italie, But I don’t have experience in oil and gas field, but I’m just graduated in Industrial maintenance (mechanic, Electricity, hydraulic, pneumatic…..), I findind that there are too much things to learn, so I would be happy if you could tell me the most important thing for a supervisor and the best way to take the best of my course because there are too many things to read and to learn,

    • Anael,

I’ve spent all my life learning and I am currently learn new things every day. Please do not expect to be an expert in few years. In the oil industry, you need to spend time with your career for awhile. The more job you do, the more experience you will have therefore you will be comfortable with your job.

I don’t have a specific advice on how to be good supervisor. I would like to advice you to take advantage as a young engineer to learn as much as you can. In next few years, you will be a good drilling engineer.

      Regards,
      Rachain J.
